Hi! Last week I met someone who asked me about my greener photography. I asked him if his business had any eco goals and the answer was: Ah no, I think it is just a bunch of media hype. I don't think it will really make a difference." What strikes me is how we can make such a mess, and then think we can do nothing about it. Even talk about going to different planets to make a living there? Isn't that the world up side down...? I think we are guests on this planet and have to leave this place preferably in a better state than when we found it. Life is about creation, not destruction! All it takes is for us to take personal responsability and DO SOMETHING Anything, but something. All little things help. What I'd like to show is that it doesn't have to be hard at all! Just look at these people: They didn't have a budget All they have is their heads, creativity and each other. I think it is a great example. 'Cause: how hard can it be to use LED instead of ordinary bulbs or take your own bag to the store instead of using al the plastic the shops provide... Actually it turned out that his business did watch their water usage and paper etc. So without being aware you might be greener than you realise. So keep adding in the good stuff! Hoi!
Ik zou zeggen: voorrrral doorrrgaaan en : Keep adding in the good stuff! Niene.nu

http://www.warmetruiendag.nl/ Casual friday! Many people have heard about it, but not many people I know do it. Time to change that! Luckily my Greenchoice electricity company is organizing a big national event. For those who wonder: The idea of 'The Warm Sweater Day' - as we call 'Casual Friday' is simple: Put on your warm sweater on fridays, turn down the heater and safe up to 7% energy per Celcius and with that 7% less CO2. They have a website with lots of tips and info, but unfortunately it is in Dutch... The Warm Sweater day is an annual event that is usually around february the 16th to celebrate the Kyoto Protocol birthday. The day on which in 2005 the Kyoto Protocol got effective. The idea is to lower the reduce carbon emissions that lead to climate changes around the world. The Warm Sweater Day is a reminder stick to what we agreed in the Kyoto Protocol. There is enormous potentialWe can save so much energy in heating our houses offices and schools Just look at the enormous potential research has pointed out when it comes to saving energy:
So from now on I'm wearing a warm sweater on Casual Friday! Join in too! Niene Hi! Last week I talked a little about the health benefits of alkaline water. This week some more. Remember science class: the pH level scale? 0= acidic and 14 being alkaline? Well, to keep your body in good shape and make sure your organs etc. can properly do what they're supposed to do, they'd like you to keep your pH levels in balance... Research show that the average pH level of your blood should be 7,41. So slightly on the alkaline side. Too much alkalinity won't get you going either... Its all about balance. What's that got to do with greener photography? Well: we want to be in good shape and health. Plus reduce 'the stuff'. Avoid everything unnecessary and redundant. Acidic environments are a good breeding ground for disease. Being sick means: over the counter drugs, more money, transport, devices... In that way I see it's green to drink clean alkaline water. What does alkaline water do for you? Alkaline water contains more anti-oxidants. They neutralise the damage free radicals can cause. Drinking alkaline water stimulates the body to produce bicaronate so your levels won't get too acidic. How to get alkaline water? there are several ways. I googled online and saw: - droplets - tablets - capsules - tea's - special machines Usually stores like Whole Foods & Mrs. Greens have bottles of ready to go alkaline water and all the mentioned above. Is water the only way to balance your pH levels? Nope! Food, breath, movement, sleep, how you feel all influence your body's general pH level. It is a huge topic to cover and I'd like to keep things simple. I'm sure we'll get to that at some point... Hi! No, I'm not talking about the green coffee Dr. Ozz promotes, but about how to do a coffee date in a greener way. There are 3 points that came to mind: 1. Skye or go? I had an appointment with someone in Leeuwarden, which is not a bike distance for me. So car or train... Dilemma. Sometimes it's good to meet up with someone in person and other times Skype will do. 2. Is the place eco? You could invite someone over to your place and use a green coffee machine, but I prefer to go out. So how to find a place that's nice, comfy and eco, serving fair trade organic coffee. There are such places if you didn't know.. Usually they will tell you via all sorts of labels. Here's a great new Starbucks store in Amsterdam: http://www.starbucks.com/responsibility/environment And 3: The thing with coffee is : it's very acidic. pH levels are important. If you're lookin' for good health (which is in a sense an eco thing to do- making sure you won't get sick and need more stuff) you'd like to balance your pH levels to an average of 7.35 This means no coffee... So I guess from now on I'd better order mint tea and drink it either in a place that's at bike- OR Skype-distance ;) Hi! 3 dingen kwamen in gedachte: 1. Skype of gaan? Niene Hi! Yeah, yeah, I hear ya.. "Really? Double sided printing?" Well yes. Double sided printing. Or Two sided. Same thing. It's one of those habits you know you should, but then forget, or it's a pain in the ... today Excuses excuses. The benefits of printing 2-sided posters & banners is pretty straight-forward; you get 2 graphics on 1 piece of material! "Double sided printing not only offers a clean and professional look, it also saves money and trees. While it may seem simple, double sided printing methods will depend on your writing software and your printer." I had to do printing the other day, so I decided to pick up double sided printing for all my office papers -of course not the photo's; that's not even possible when using photo paper.. I mean what would you do with a two sided print up the wall? Swap it around every once in a while?- Hmm... Canon?!? Epson?!? So I got out the manual, set the printers' default to double sided and voila! If you want to know more: here's some tips: http://www.ehow.com/how_2253127_print-double-sided.html Short tip but powerful! Enjoy! Hi! Ja, ja, ik hoor je al.. Dubbelzijdig printen?!? 'Really?' Mooi! Niene Hi! Last tuesday I talked about greener business cards. I ordered another batch so now it's time to go out there and share 'the word of the MoodLab'. But... How to network green? transport First you've got to get to the networking place. Greenest option: walk! Not always possible, so for me it's the bike or public transport. Or carpooling. Great for conversations too! the location If it's up to you to decide on the location and you want to make sure that the location cares as much about the environment as you do, there's the option of 'Green Key'. It's an international label. Here's a video in which they explain what they do: serious green! If you choose a green key location, you can rest assured that it will not be a place where they think going green is just the next marketing trick to earn some more green- as in ..cash.. A green location is held accountable for it's green deeds. And - very good- as an active green customer you will be rewarded! Arrive by public transport? Yay! You'll get a refund. Got there in your electric car? Yay! Free parking. I like this rewarding aspect! It's a great icentive and educative way to promote the greener life! offer your help Of course if you are not the person to decide where the networking takes place, you can suggest, educate and help the organising party in finding green locations . The more demand, the more action people will take. food & drinks It's getting so much more easier & cheaper to order organic, fair-trade, local meat-less & seasonal. Again: Vendors want to sell. The more customers ask for these kinds of products, the more vendors will be encouraged to offer. Client is king so we as consumers have a huge say in the matter. And the more demand, the cheaper organic fair-trade foods will get. health Organic, local, seasonal, ripe , plant-based foods are also healthier for you. There are lots of sites online where you can find places where they serve foods and drinks that are organic and local. I can't name them all but if you're in Holland these are a good place to start: www.puuruiteten.nl www.iens.nl Virtual coffee dates Last but not least this tip -a great idea: Coffee dating via Skype or Yakfirst. Yakfirst is a very similar to speeddating. Here's how it works. At he comfort of your own house, your own favorite sustainable beverages. No hassle finding out wether there will be green options available. It will safe you time: you don't have to go anywhere an loose time & money travelling. For me I'd have to watch the time a spend behind my desk. I can totally lose track of time sitting behind my computer. So I'd have to make sure I do go out for a breath of fresh air. Hi! Men wordt echt gekeurd. Niene Hi! First of all let me wish you a very happy 2013!!! I hope 2013 will be a creative, inspiring year that will make all your wishes come true but most of all make you feel good! Let's kick off this new year by adding in the good green stuff right from the start with this all newly revamped lay out. Hope you like it. As we say in Dutch: No better start than a good start! Greener businescards In january there will be a lot of networking going on; telling people about the Moodlab. Of course I will be handing out business cards. How to create greener businescards? Simple: MOO! No,no, I didn't turn into a cow: it's a printing company. www.moo.com Design You can upload your own designed .PDF You can use their template You can use their design builder to create our own cards Or You can ask the MOO staff to design a card for ya. No sweats! Choose the green option If you choose the green option, the paper used is 352gsm paper, thick! With a light, non reflective coating. It is very good for photography. 100% recycled and recyclable. Manyfactured using windpower. (I would prefer solar; as a photographer I love light, but hey, wind is good too!) And it is free of chemicals.YAY!!! Strong eco credenials indeed! Shipping Problem... They are based in the UK and the US. fairly local, but transport involved. So I first tried several other printing services. But after testing and trying I have to say: MOO's better. faster, fairly cheap.. Maybe a little bit further away, but I've never had better quality cards + my designs are saved online. If I need a new batch of cards I can simply re-order the last and voila! Safes a lot of hassle! And that's worth something. Comfort + Luxury + Beauty is the game of the MoodLab. And Moo delivers that too So: MOO for the MOOdLab! I guess I will be planting some fruit trees in the spring to offset shipping But for now: happy networking! Hi! Hoe groen is MOO? Heel mooi voor foto's! 100% recycled and recyclable. "Strong eco credenials" indeed! Shipping.. Goeie snelle service. Merry Christmas! Do you ever wonder what to do this day? Well, here's a wonderful green tip: it's a movie with beautiful footage of our planet called "Home" You can watch it online here: No worries; the movie is -in my opinion- not about doom & gloom We are all in this extraordinary experience. And although the film might talk about lack, I see it as being abundance used wrongly We cAn be more considerate of what we use. "The law of nature; "if you take more tan you need... inequality/dusbalance will reap havoc..." But like they put it in the movie: It's too late to be a pessimist. I agree. Change will only come by adding in the good stuff. By our willingness to shift our MindSets (mark my word; it's going to be the 2013 word...) Adding in more and more of the good stuff to make the bad become absolete. So you won't feel deprived And are able to stick to the path of change. So? How are you gonna make sure you're not one of the 200 billion climat refugees? And how are you going to help reduce that number to 0? "It's time to come together What's important is not what's gone, but what remains We still have half the worlds forests, thouands of rivers lakes and glaciers and thousands of thriving species We know that the sollutions are there today We all have the power to change So what are we waiting for? It's up to us towrite what happens next" So what do you think? Shall we -us, you and me, together - write about how we changed for the better and made this beautiful experience called planet earth available for many more generations of humans and other specimens to come? Enjoy! The movie, the planet & your holidays! Niene In case you'd like to find out more: http://oeom.org/activism/environmental/ Hi! Je kunt 'm gratis online, op YouTube bekijken "We are all in this extraordinary experience.", mooi gezegd! Mooie beelden, he? Mooi! Next? Veel kijkplezier. Geniet van de mooie beelden. En hele fijne kerstdagen! Niene PS Hi! It's tuesday; time for another green tip. This week it's Send a smile! Did you already start writing your holiday wishes? Are you postponing too? Thinking about sending emails instead, but feel a little guilty about it and at the same time are not looking for the enourmous task of all these cards? Use Send a smile! nienesmoodlab.sendasmile.com You just click the link, pick a card, type your message in a font or colour you like, -if you're smart you 'copy paste' ;) - Type the addresses in the text field and voila! Pay online, and the rest is taken care of Easy peasy! And of course the cards are printed on FSC paper, they have the Dutch ISO 14001 certificate. You can see a film of them here: But that is the Dutch department. There is also an english and American shop; so shipping costs are always reduced, because the cards are printed locally. Hopefully there will be an asian shop too. If you want to visit the UK store: nienesmoodlabuk.sendasmile.com And the American store: nienesmoodlabus.sendasmile.com Have fun! And of course for you too: All the best wishes the coming days! Hoi! It's durable tuesday. Yay! And today's green tip is: spread the word. Yep. I actually did this last week when I had a speaking gig in Joure. To quite a room full of photographers. Which I think is a kind of a big deal, I mean I know of only 2 other photographers who conciously act green in their biz. Let's hope yesterday's people are here now. And if you are: well done you! Awesome to see you here. Loved talking to all of you last week!
