A week has passed so time for green action2: internet


But first a follow up on the last post: unfortunately my roof is too small for the solar panels, but I do now have green energy of a power plant that only uses durable green sources to get their green energy and gas. 


So action 1 is completed, time for action 2; the internet.


Why? Internet is a climat killer...
"Internet provides us the luxury of unprecedented digital connection, but at the same time the amount of energy needed to keep millions of websites, servers and data centres up and running is enormous. Many people do not realise that the internet has become one of today’s major polluters, already responsible for as much CO2 emission as the entire aviation industry. And with the continued demand on our internet infrastructure the problem is not going to get easier." (from: cleanbits)
But as a true digital girl, I use the internet a lot; privately and of course for my business:  surfing, browsing, using social media and showing my website.
So how to get that green?

Green action 2.1. browse green:
You can search the internet while saving the rainforest by using Ecosia.

Why browse green?
To cut down on CO2 emissions.
The profits Yahoo and Bing gain from advertisements are now used to do something back for the environment: Ecosia!

How does this help?
Ecosia donates 80% of it's revenue to a rainforest project run by the WWF, so by searching you are saving the lungs of our planet.

Vandaag een korte/snelle groene "actie"; being 'flasbbergasted" -wat een mooi woord toch en geen mooi Nederlands equivalent voor wat mij betreft-

Yeah, it's that time of the year where you'll be sending dear ones a card to wish them happy holidays and a happy new year.
You might have notices I did too and since 2011 is the year I decided to go green, of course I had to look for a green alternative; found a printing service that works totally climate neutral; great! They do it all: bio inks, FSC papers, green electricity & no chemicals.

In the last video you can see the result of the cards I made for you -still available for order, but act quickly, 'cause they are wanted!

Jawel, we gaan weer massaal wenskaarten sturen en natuurlijk wil ik als groene fotograaf met een klimaatneutrale kaart komen.

Daarom lang gezocht en een bedrijf gevonden dat  doet. Gevonden!

Ecosia heeft een nieuwe manier om  'groene' internet winkels te kunnen vinden zodat je met je aankoop direct doneert voor aanplant van jungle. Moet je de video maar zien:

Time to see how to alter; time for a new green blogpost.


Last week I took a look at going paperless.
I often use notebooks.
That's paper.
I use them to jot down ideas, make notes in meetings, create to-do-lists and whatever else comes to mind.
Lots of different books.
Lots of paper.

Is there an alternative that's really greener?

In my research I found that there are different views on wether going paperless is indeed good for the environment...
Apparently there is a big discussion going on between Google & Printing Industries..
Printing industries say they have a large 'economic footprint'.
Two opinions with different interests.
How surprising ;)

Hmm.
Not very helpful...
Think I'll just have to look further.

I also stumbled upon something called "Pen Ultimate"
Basically it is a digital notebook on the iPad that is connected to Evernote.
So all your notes will be available at all your devices.
Handy!

I decided to give it a try since I already have an iPad.
1 device for everything.
And that energy is already in use...


My handwriting looks different, but I like the fact that everything is in one spot.
And if needed you can create different notebooks.
With different kinds of papers; lines, plain white, maths etc.

To be honest: I'm not really sure this is actually greener, some say it is, others don''t and neither of them seem to come up with actual data, but less hassle& clutter it is indeed!
I'll keep using it.

Hoi!

Fotografie is een kunstvorm die ons helpt de wereld om ons hen te interpreteren.
De aard van de gereedschappen and traditionele materialen maakt fotografie een high-tec werkveld en daarmee een energie-intensief werkveld.
Dus... 
Tijd om te kijken of dat niet anders kan; tijd voor een nieuwe groene blogpost.

Voriger week had ik het al over een papierloos kantoor..
Ik gebruik vaak notitieboekjes.
Da's papier.
Ik gebruik ze om ideetjes te onthouden, te-doen-lijsten te maken, notities van besprekingen vast te leggen en wat er nog meer in gedachten komt. 
Ondertussen is t een hele verzameling notitieboekjes geworden..
Veel papier!

Is er een groener alternatief?

In mijn zoektocht kwam ik erachter dat er verschillende meningen zijn.
Meningen van verschillende belanghebbende partijen: bv Google en de Print Industrie. Gaat dat om hun marktaandeel of om echt de aarde gezonder te krijgen?

Ik krijg er eerlijk gezegd niet goed hoogte van en ben nog geen echt solide feiten tegen gekomen, behalve de cijfers die ik vorige week noemde.
Waarschijnlijk heeft het meer tijd nodig om echt uit te vinden.

Al zoekende kwam ik "Pen Ultimate" tegen.
Waar het op neer komt is dat het een digitaal nititieboek is dat je ze groot en klein kunt maken als je wilt.
Het boekje is verbonden met Evernote, zodat je meteen online en op al je apparaten, dus waar je ook bent ter wereld, bij je notities kan.
Handig!

Minder gesleep -iPad heb ik sowieso al mee- en minder vulling op de boekenplank.
Apple Notes of Pages werken natuurlijk ook, maar Penultimate voelt echt als een notitieboekje.
Wat me ook aanspreekt is dat je kunt "schrijven" met zo'n digi pennetje.
Mijn handschrift ziet er wat minder 'mijn' uit, maar dat zal vast in korte tijd anders zijn.

Je kunt meerder notitiebokjes maken en verschillende papiersoorten kiezen en makkelijk pagina's invoegen.
Kijk, dat gaat een ouderwets notitieboekje niet lukken!

Al met al weet ik nu niet 100% zeker of dit nu Echt groener is...
Ik heb groene stroom, heb sowieso al een iPad en het scheelt plankruimte.
Voorlopig lijkt me dit redelijk groen.

Quite a big topic today eyh?
Well, it is not as daunting as it may seem; this post is about Earth Hour.


March 23. 8:30pm. You switch off the lights. Like everybody else on the planet.
6 billion people. Switching off the lights. To protect the planet.
Get your candles at the ready!!!

Why Earth Hour in today's post?
You see: last week I received an email from Posterous saying that they are going to stop.
That I need to remove all the posts I want to safe.
Or they will dissapear...
Goodbye Green Blog?

Well. No?
I started this blogpost to keep myself accountable for taking greener actions.
And to share. So that others may be inspired to do the same.
That will process will not stop by just switching off Posterous.


I will take this week to find an alternative way to share my green musings.
But I think Earth Hour is the perfect hour to switch.
Not switch off the Greener Blogposts, but switch off Posterous.

Zo zeg... Dat is nog 'es een titel..
Hup de hele planeet redden
Nogal een streven voor vandaag, niet?
 
Maarreh, het is niet zo groots als het doet vermoeden, of toch wel? 
Vandaag wil ik het hebben over Earth Hour.
28 maart. Om 20:30 uur. Over de hele wereld.
Alle lichten uit. Om de planeet te beschermen.


Waarom is Earth Hour het onderwerp vandaag?
Ik kreeg vandeweek een email dat bij Posterous de lichten uitgaan.
Ze stoppen ermee.
Of ik alle blogposts die ik wil bewaren er af wil halen, anders verdwijnen ze.
Daaag groene blogpost?


Wel. Nee?
Ik ben destijds begonnen met groenere blogposts om mezelf te dwingen actie te ondernemen.
En mijn bevindingen te delen.
En misschien zou dat anderen inspireren om ook actie te ondernemen.
Zonder dat je een milieu zeurpiet (leuk woord!) hoeft te worden of terug moet naar 'huisje op de prairie'.
Als alles wat we nodig hebben om een gezondere planeet te maken er al is, kan dat dan ook op een manier die leuk en comfortabel en inspirerend is?
Die zoektocht stopt niet met het stoppen van Posterous.


Deze week wordt het daarom zoeken naar een alternatieve manier om groenere info naar buiten te krijgen; tips zijn welkom!
Maar voorlopig is Earth Hour het perfecte moment om de lichten van de groenere blogposts op Posterous uit te doen. Af te sluiten.

Too much manure.
Yet we do have the cleanest drinking water... 

So that being true: why still use plastic water bottles?
'Cause they need to be produced. 
And shipped.. 
Not green.


Wat is going on there?
Convenience? 
Are we lazy; taking your own bottle means a little planning and preparing?
Are we totally brainwashed by the commercials saying 'you are cool when you carry your [fill-in-the-brand]-water? (very cool, creating this big landfill...)
Don't want any hassle, dragging more weight around?
"They recycle them anyways?"
"A 're-usable' has all these germs, eew!!?"

Ok. How about this?
- tapwater  is 340x cheaper. I repeat: it's 340 times cheaper.
- producing a plastic bottle costs 2000 times more energy 
- Yes and.. there is a plastic floating field in the Pacific the size of 2x the US..  

Hmmm!
So a re-usable bottle it is!
And there are such cutes ones: just look at them below this post!
I have the Bobble and my trusted, golden oldie; the thermos!

About the KRNWTR below:

Ge-brainwashed door alle reclame?
Geen zin in gesleep?
"Het wordt toch wel gerecycled?"
"Zo'n 'her-gebruik-flesje', daar komen allemaal bacterieen in?"

OK, wat dacht je hiervan?
- kraanwater is 340x goedkoper
- een plastic flesje maken kost 2000 keer meer energie (bv aardolie)
- ja en.. nadat je dat plastic flesje hebt gebruikt en je gooit 't weg; Ik las dat in de stille oceaan een hoeveelheid plastic afval drijft dat 2x zo groot is als de VS...

Hmmm!

Hi!

I've got two exhibitions coming up.
Time to find a way to exhibit in a climate neutral way.

Luckily I found this company that prints that does just that.
They print on wood. FSC wood. (Forest Stewardship Council)
So you know for sure that the workers get paid an honest price and more trees are planted than chopped to maintain the process.
Wood that is from cultivated trees

With UV inks, which is the most durable printing technique available in the Netherlands right now.
So a local print. This ink will dry faster and has no chemicals that are hard on the environment.

And they are wrapped  with FSC-proof kartons.
Very re-assuring.
Can't wait to show you!

Hi!

Er staan in de Moodlab 2 exposities op stapel.
Wat zal ik laten zien en hoe kan ik dat op een klimaat neutrale manier doen?
Gelukkig vond ik een bedrijf dat inderdaad zegt klimaatneutraal te werken.
Hoe doen ze dat?

FSC Hout
Het hout waarmee ze werken is FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) gekeurd.
Dit keurmerk geeft niet alleen de zekerheid dat de lokale houthakker een eerlijke prijs krijgt voor zijn hout, maar tevens garandeerd het FSC keurmerk dat er meer bomen herplant worden dan er voor de print worden gebruikt. 
Ook de verpakkingsmaterialen voor verzending zijn voorzien van een FSC keurmerk.

UV Inkt
Ze gebruiken de meest duurzame printtechniek op dit moment beschikbaar in Nederland.
Hun digitale printers werken met UV drogende inkt. Deze inkt droogt door licht en bevat geen oplosmiddelen die belastend zijn voor het milieu.
-Er bestaan overigens bio-inkt technieken, maar die ben ik nog niet voor foto's echt tegengekomen..?-

Super!
Ik heb de prints besteld en ze worden aan het eind van de week geleverd.
Kan niet wachten om ze je te laten zien!

The environmental argument for going paperless is rock solid: 
You can save 150,939,615 pounds of paper and thereby save 1,811,275 trees, avoid producing almost 2 million tons of greenhouse gases, 
avoid creating more than a billion gallons of waste-water during paper production and avoid using more than 100 million gallons of gas to mail payments. 


Switching over to electronic statements is an easy way to save paper.
And I was still receiving paper bank statements for some accounts.
Time to switch.
And voila!

Het argument voor een papierloos kantoor is "rock solid":
Er kan zo 150,939,615 kilo papier per jaar worden bespaard,
en daarmee 1,811,275 bomen,
waardoor er 2 miljoen ton uitlaatgassen in e lucht zouden zijn gekomen.
Je bespaart meer dan een miljard liter water die nodig is voor de porductie van papier en meer dan 100 miljoen gallons = 100 miljoen x 378.54118 liter gas om betalingen te posten...


Ik kreeg nog steeds afschriften van een bankrekening.
Alles wat nog niet automatisch is overzetten naar automatische afschriftenEn nu dus niet meer...
