Hi! As a photographer I need clothes. Duh! -NICE excuse LOL - But I need them to be : comfortable. weather proof. strong, good quality, good colour, preferably cool, well dressed, don't go to waste after 1 visit in the washing machine And of course I need good shoes... Yep... I'm a girl.. I dug into the materials and found out that the production of 1 T-shirt alone costs 2700 Liters water... And the production of 1 pair of jeans 600 Liters When you know that only 1% of all the water on the planet is drinkable water, it might be a good idea to be a little more conscious about it. We don't do very well without water... So what are sustainable/carbon neutral options for clothes? Well: of course there is the ever present option of *refuse (to buy that is ... just keep what you've got until they need to be replaced; you've probably got enough clothes anyway... - also a good reason to watch your weight - *reduce (hmm can be tough at times, not buying anything..) * re-use Like in Thrift stores * recycle Swap! Swap with friends can be a really good one; organise a clothing market evening where you take all the stuff you bought that were misfits and swop them with your friends. and voila! And when you choose a thrift store, preferably chose one in a fancy town like Greenwich, CT; they've got your designer brands, hihi! But you've got to be in the States to be able to go there. Hmmm How about online? Miss Green? http://www.miss-green.nl/ Yay! Very good option! Bought a pair of pants and they rock! And how about Craigslist...? How do I know the green clothes really are green? Well in Holland there is a site called goedewaar.nl that has a clothes brand checker on goedewaar.nl http://www.goedewaar.nl/merken http://www.goedewaar.nl/merken/kledingmerken http://www.goedewaar.nl/merken/kledingmerken/conclusies There are also a number of labels that will tell you if you're dealing with a better option: fwf fair wear foundation www.fairwear.org ILO International Labour Organisation :better circomstances for labourers . And better for people = better for the environment ; no chemicals! And your skin is your largest organ... www.global-standard.org www.faborganics.eu (organic work clothes) www.made-by.org (clothes good for people & planet) So shop 'till you drop can still be fun & green! Yay! Ja he? Ja he? Shop 'till you drop! Niene.nu Hi! It's tuesday; here's another green action I took: green webhosting! As you might have noticed I have a new business with a new website online called "Moodlab" If you haven't yet, please check it out! www.nienesmoodlab.nu Websites need to be hosted, you need online space to stall 'em, amd what better way to do it green. More and more hosting services are waking up and doing their bit for the environment. I checked several of them: Dreamhost.com Yourhosting.nl and Greenhost.nl All and all it doesn't matter where you are on the globe if you choose a provider. Things to look out for are: -How user friendly is their cPanel system Most Dutch hosts use their own kind of cPanel, and although they're not all in Dutch, it might be convenient to check out in case you have a webmaster/builder that is not Dutch... I choose for Greenhost & Yourhosting, because they use: -a cPanel that is in english - 70% less energy than most providers - Evoswitch, http://www.evoswitch.com/en - 2 datacentres for optimal safety & up-time. Safe idea. If a storm hits one place, the other one may still be up and you'll have no downtime. - clustered hosting = http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Clustered_web_hosting - Donations to Bits of freedom ( so they make sure digital rights, focussing on privacy & communications freedom are protected https://www.bof.nl/home/english-bits-of-freedom/And they are "log-free"; they do not check who you are emailing. They support organisations that care about freedom of press, sustainability & culture And they have awesome customer service; so green, experienced, innovative and committed. - FYI: I am not receiving any money to plug Greenhost; it is just a company that speaks to me - See you next week! Niene.nu 13/11/2012 0 Comments Home" The Movie - green action #23Hi! It's been a while... Lately I stumbled upon this website: http://oeom.org/activism/environmental/ Here's some inspiration to get back into the green action: "Home", the movie We are all in this extraordinary experience together. if you still don't see the need to go green; look at this movie.. Maybe that'll change your mind And very cool imagery, right? The film talkes about lack. I prefer to look at it as 'abundance used wrongly' We should be more considerate of what we use And the Law of nature states; if you take more than you need... inequality/disbalance will reap havoc... But like the movie also sais: It's too late to be a pessimist. I agree. Change will only come by adding in the good stuff. The bad will become absolete and you won't feel deprived and stick to the path of change. So how are you gonna make sure you're not one of the 200 billion climat refugees? And how are you going to help reduce that number to 0? "It's time to come together. What's important is not what's gone, but what remains. We still have half the worlds forests, thouands of rivers lakes and glaciers and thousands of thriving species. We know that the sollutions are there today. We all have the power to change. So what are we waiting for? It's up to us towrite what happens next" Shall we write about how we changed for the better and made this beautiful experience called planet earth available for generations to come? Enjoy the movie! (zie 'm boven) "We are all in this extraordinary experience.", mooi gezegd! Mooie beelden, he? Mooi! Next? Veel kijkplezier. Geniet van de mooie beelden. Niene.nu 10/11/2012 0 Comments Yay!!! Johannes left nog!!!Hi! It's been a while since I was able to post anything, but I'm back in business and I'm gonna start with good news. This morning I received an email that Johannes, my christmas tree is still alive! Yay Johannes! You remember how last year I adopted a christmas tree and called him Johannes? It's an organic tree that is replanted after he spends the holidays at my house. Can't wait to pick him up in december. Can't believe how fast time flies... January @ niene.nu is all about clearing clutter. Last week talked about my clutter, now it's time to clear the Sinterklaas / Christmas / New Years Eveclutter in my body! To do just that I signed up to do "The world's biggest juice detox 9-16 january 2012" of Jason Vale. Check his video here and subscribe too! "Hey", you'll probably wonder... "This is a photography blog.." "How is that related to that being a climate neutral photographer?" Well; in several ways actually: for instance juicing is the most green way to eat; no cooking; organic whole foods, your body detoxifies and you'll gain more clarity, energy, stamina and it sort of lifts a fog you never even knew was there. Which is really good for your creativity, energy and flow. And we want that as a photographer!Plus: you'll loose a few pounds; I'm in! If you feel inspired and want to join in as well: http://www.juicemaster.com/ So cheers to you! And maybe we'll meet at his forum! I'm in! Happy New Year! For most people a new year means new years resolutions! And yes; I have them too. Big plans. In january I am clearing out the clutter to start with for one; it keeps the inspiration in 'flow' -very very important!- You also are making space when your clearing out clutter and what a great way to start the new. What clutter can a person have, phew! I threw out soooo much stuff. To the second hand store and into the garbage. While doing so I stumbled upon a dutch article about throwing away stuff. Did you know it takes really simple little actions to save having the trouble of throwing out up 'till 50 kilo's on garbage every year!?! Really simple little actions like: - put a sticker on your door/mailbox you don't like to receive direct mail anymore; saves you 14 kilo's a year; done! - refuse plastic bags in stores and you'll save 3 kg a year: done! Less garbage means less raw materials needed means less energy spent; great! On the (dutch... sorry) website where I found this information, I also took the opportynity to take a test to check how much food I actually throw out every year. -drummroll- I am very proud of myself to say I throw out less than average! Whohooo! What a fresh, clean and great way to start of the new year! 1/1/2012 0 Comments Happy Happy 2012Hi!
I just wanted to say: I wish you all the best for 2012! Let's make this a year full of inspiration and well-being! Whohooo! Niene.nu Hi! Yes, the holiday season is up and running! And yes, today Sinterklaas will celebrated his birthday. (Happy birthday Sinterklaas!) Time for a greener christmas tree. How does that relate to photography? Well... not, unless you regards having a christmas tree as keeping ones inspiration flow high. So yes a christmas tree! But how to 'green' the already green? Easy: you adopt an eco tree! I'm thinking I'll call mine 'Johannes' (first name that came to mind...) And so I am going to the Friesestraatweg to collect mine, decorate it with lights, enjoy it and in january return it to the Friesestraatweg so it can be replanted and sit, grow and wait for me to re-use it next year; great! Saturday the first edition of 'Help-Portrait' here in Groningen; I'll take a picture of Johannes for you so we can, together, enjoy his green! I was looking for a label so I can show I am a green photographer; a sort of certification. Currently they is only such a thing in the States... Great, but I'm not living there... I did apply, but they did not respond to my various emails... So now what? What labels are available in Holland/Europe? You as a customer need to know that we both care about the environment and we together are taking serious steps improving our climate 'neutraleness'... -is that a word?- Unfortunately there are no agreements, so no label for green photography in the Netherlands at this moment. I applied, but couldn't get the European Ecolabel (maybe your business can? http://ec.europa.eu/environment/ecolabel/ecolabelled_products/product_categories_en.htm) ; They also said that according to them there are no criteria yet to be expected in the near future... hmm So I will just keep going on with my actions on my own. Maybe I should design my own label... How about this label design... -It says: "No Impact photography"- Niene.nu Hi!
